fall term

2024

fall term
Exploring the relationship between the center of the body and the periphery. Pelvic, navel, solar plexus, heart, and throat centers addressed in a way that fosters stress reduction and an improved sense of space within.

summer term
Strengthening and lengthening the quadriceps. Lots of attention to balancing the quads with the adductors. Hamstring and gluteal strength will activate as we endeavor to send the quads in various directions while in poses.

spring term
Preparations and sequencing to enter handstand. Learning to sense the radius and ulna, to move them in space, providing strength and relief for the neck, shoulders and wrists. Emphasis on healthy hand and wrist dynamics, regardless of whether one enters handstand.

winter term
Treating the throat center via pincha mayurasana and sarvangasana. Emphasis on building the strength and coordination for pincha mayurasana, while referring to the psoas pathway, kidneys, front and sides of the vertebral bodies. Lots of work with the different aspects of the lungs.

2023

fall term
Sensing and moving from the large intestines. Work with the columns, or ascending and descending colon, in addition to the transverse colon. References to the flexures by the liver and spleen.

summer term
Detailed work with the obturator foramina. The perimeter of this aperture in the pelvis provides strength and stability for the hip joint, lumbar spine and knees.

spring term
Preparations and sequencing to enter padmasana, or lotus pose. Varied hip and knee preparations to set the stage for a sane approach to this very challenging pose. Basic obturator foramina work introduced.

winter term
Exploring pathways into halasana and halasana alternatives. During the more restful time of year, we explore how to sequence and prepare the body for one of the most profoundly restorative poses for nerves and glands, plow pose.

2022

fall term
Further development of cues and releases for the greater trochanter. Precise delineation of the different aspects of the greater trochanter, how to place the awareness there. How to begin moving and editing textures around the greater trochanter. Lots of benefits for hip, low back, sacro-iliac challenges and more.

summer term
Introduction to the cap and sleeves of the greater trochanters. Exploring basic references and working directions to gain access to the greater trochanter in poses. Emphasis on providing stability during the releasing of space.

spring term
Elongating and strengthening the neck, preparing for headstand. We explore cues related to C7 and other anatomical references. Building strength, elongation and resilience in the neck in preparation for headstand.

winter term
Exploring shoulderstand and alternatives. An entire term opening the body to improve the shoulderstand experience. Complete walk through from arranging props, to entering the pose, and gradually sequencing towards the full pose with intermediate steps.

2021

fall term
Developing references and cues to access the abdominal musculature in a more sophisticated way. We distinguish between the upper, middle, and lower abs, exploring how they relate to one another in movement. Lots of work with the side margins of the abs, lower corners, upper corners and more.

summer term
Nuanced work with the front, back, sides, tops and bottoms of the kidneys. Exploring how movements from these places help us gain deeper access to poses. Emphasis on poses that rebuild kidney vitality while soothing the nervous system.

spring term
Exploring the respiratory diaphragm in asana and pranayama. We explore how to balance the inner body weight between the front and back of the diaphragm, how to facilitate twists with diaphragmmatic movements, and how to relate the respiratory diaphragm to the pelvic and upper thoracic diaphragms.

winter term
Description of and work with the “thoracic eye.” This is a set of defined spaces in the upper thorax, that resemble the shape of an eye. By working with the margins and relationships of these shapes, we bring improved health to the neck, shoulders, ears, nose, throat, and more.

fall term
Pandemic, wildfires, election, oh my! This term focuses upon soothing the nervous system, reducing anxiety and supporting the heart in remaining open.

summer term
Tuesday morning classes develop the strength, coordination and functional dynamics to practice headstand safely (with alternatives). Thursday morning classes feature improving familiarity and proficiency with shoulderstand.

spring term
Trying our best to retain sanity and safety during covid’s arrival worldwide. Most classes explore the basics of the standing postures, to provide familiar content to ground the mind, while developing strength and endurance during a time of immense social change.
